Big Fines for Throwing Cigarette Butts Out Car Windows

Under the Wildfire Act:

• Section 3 (2), Fail to extinguish burning substance: $575...

The RDOS has received calls from residents who are concerned about how to report people that throw cigarettes or cigarette butts out of car windows. This is approved Provincial messaging and the procedure to follow:

Wildfire Bulletin - Regional Restrictions to Reduce Potential Wildfires

The Province of BC is under a province wide ‘State of Emergency’ due to wildfires. The current Fire Danger rating for most of the regional district is ‘Extreme’.

Temporary Closure of Riparian Park due to fire risk

Effective immediately, Keremeos Fire Chief, Jordy Bosscha, has ordered the temporary closure of Riparian Park to mitigate fire risk.

 

Riparian Park is a natural habitat that is intentionally not maintained with irrigation or mowing. During periods of drought the grass can become very dry. As a precautionary measure, Riparian Park will be closed to the public until the risk of fire has diminished.

 

Memorial and Pine Parks will stay open to the public, as usual.

Flail Mowing of Village Trails Halted Until Further Notice

Please be advised that flail mowing of Village trails has been halted until further notice (flail mowing creates sparks which are considered too much of a fire risk at this time).

 

Mowing of green grass in Village owned parks will continue as formerly.

Evacuation Centre Now Open at Keremeos Rodeo Grounds (3012 River Road, Keremeos BC)

The Keremeos Elks Association have been working hard to set up the Keremeos Rodeo Grounds to accommodate evacuees who have been displaced by recent wildfires in our province.

Campfires Banned within Kamloops Fire Centre and Village of Keremeos

Effective at noon on Friday, July 7, 2017, open burning and campfires are prohibited throughout the Kamloops Fire Centre and Village of Keremeos to help prevent human-caused wildfires and protect public safety.

 

This campfire ban will remain in place until the public is otherwise notified.
